词汇 | fourth estate |
词源 | Fourth Estate. This term for the press is said to have been coined by British statesman Edmund Burke (1729–97), who reputedly said of the Reporters’ Gallery in the House of Com- mons: “Yonder sits the Fourth Estate, more important than them all.” The other three estates of the realm are the Crown, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. Unfortunate- ly, no record exists of the Burke observation, and some histori- ans believe the words should be credited to Lord Macaulay, who wrote in an 1843 essay: “The gallery in which the reporters sit has become a fourth estate of the realm.” |
