foxglove. “Fairy glove” and “finger-flower” are two other pop- ular names for the handsome foxglove (Digitalis purpurea), which takes its scientific name from the Latin digitus, “finger.” The flower’s tubular blossoms resemble a finger or the empty finger of a glove, but no one knows where the fox in the popular designation comes from, though it could be a corruption of folks’ (folks’ glove). The ground leaves of the plant are used to make the heart medicine digitalis. |
