The chosen name of Cassius Clay, which many African Americans considered a “slave name.” Ali, born in 1942, was a U.S. boxer who held the Olympic light-heavyweight championship in 1960 and became the world professional cham- pion four years later. He was a true boxer complete with fancy footwork and stinging punches, although he had a knockout punch as well. The only man to regain the title twice, he was not- ed for his quick wit and little poems, such as: You don’t want no pie in the sky when you die, You want something here on the ground While you’re still around. |
