Bat Masterson. A fabled gunfighter; after William Barclay “Bat” Masterson (1853–1920), a western lawman who never lost a gun battle. Masterson is one of the few gunfighters who didn’t die a violent death. He became a sportswriter in New York City and is said to have “died at his desk gripping his pen with the te- nacity with which he formerly clung to his six-shooter.” Master- son got the nickname “Bat” because while a sheriff in Kansas he often batted down lawbreakers with his cane instead of shooting them.
