Queen Anne’s fan. Since the beginning of the 18th century, this term has stood for putting the thumb to the top of the nose and spreading out and wiggling the fingers. It is said to be named after England’s Queen Anne (1665–1714), who often hid her face behind a fan. The rude gesture is also called “Anne’s fan,” “Spanish fan,” “cock a snook,” and “thumb one’s nose.” |
