An acronym composed of letters from “quasi-stellar object,” quasar was coined by scientists in the 1960s to de- scribe any of some 40 million celestial objects, up to 10 billion light years distant from earth, which are powerful emitters of radio waves. Quasars are also called quasi-stellar radio sources. |
