词源	quarter section. The Americanism quarter section of land was popularized by the Homestead Act of 1862, which said that any settler on the frontier could have 160 acres of public land free if he could raise a crop on at least 40 acres of it for five years. The 160 acres equaled a quarter of a square mile and was commonly called a quarter section or quarter. The former term, however, had been used as early as 1804, and the latter as early as 1640.
