词源	quarter horses. Quarter horses are named for their ability to run well in quarter-mile races, not because of their size or line- age. The term is an Americanism, first recorded in 1834, though quarter races are mentioned a good 50 years earlier as being very popular in the South. Quarter horses, usually smaller than Thoroughbred racehorses, were also called quarter nags.
