词汇 | queen of the seas |
词源 | Queen of the Seas. The Italian city of Venice was built on 118 alluvial islets within a lagoon. Between the islands are 160 mostly narrow canals crossed by hundreds of bridges, but the beautiful “Queen of the Seas,” as Venice has been called, has only gondolas and other boats as means of conveyance; there is water literally everywhere. The first time he visited Venice, hu- morist Robert Benchley was on assignment for the New Yorker. “Streets full of water,” he wired his editor Harold Ross, “please advise.” |
