词汇 | queen anne-s lace |
词源 | Queen Anne’s lace. According to folklore, the beautiful wild carrot (Daucus carota) is named for the rather homely Anne of Bohemia, who married England’s Richard II in 1382. One sto- ry tells of a ward of the queen who chose this herb’s delicate flower as a tatting pattern. This little girl came to Anne’s atten- tion when she was found innocent of a childish prank and the queen discovered her pattern, which she liked so much that she gave the child permission to name it after her. Another story has it that Queen Anne challenged her ladies in waiting to a contest to see who could made embroidery most similar to the pretty flower. The queen, of course, won. In any case, the name Queen Anne’s lace was later transferred to the wild car- rot’s flower and then to the herb itself. Still another tale has Queen Anne’s lace named for Saint Anne, “Queen of Heaven,” the mother of Mary and grandmother of Jesus. Appropriately this Anne is the patron saint of lacemakers. Tradition has it that she and her husband, Joachim, were unable to have chil- dren, and only divine intervention enabled her to conceive, which would explain why the plant named after her was long believed to have aphrodisiac properties. No matter which of these stories is correct, Queen Anne’s lace will remain as beau- tiful as ever. It blooms as an escape on roadsides throughout America and England in late summer and is sometimes culti- vated in the garden, as it well deserves to be; in fact, it was first brought to America by Virginia colonists for use in their for- mal gardens. |
