A phrase common among Americans fol- lowing the rutted Oregon Trail west in the 1840s and 1850s at about three miles an hour. “At night,” writes David Dary in The Oregon Trail (2005), “the tongue of the lead wagon was pointed toward the North Star, so that the wagon train could orient it- self the next morning.” |
