词汇 | young folk of the pear garden |
词源 | Young Folk of the Pear Garden. An ancient name for any Chi- nese actor. About a.d. 720 Chinese emperor Ming Huang visited the Moon, according to Chinese legend, and was royally enter- tained there by plays and players. This inspired the emperor to es- tablish a lavish theater and the world’s first school of acting in the Pear Garden of the Imperial Park. Perhaps Ming Huang visited the Moon in his dreams—no astronaut has reported resident ac- tors there—but he did build his theater and dramatic academy. His actors were called “Disciples (or Young Folk, or Students) of the Pear Garden,” and, indeed, all Chinese actors were so called up until the mid-20th century. The term is still heard occasionally today, but the theater no longer exists. See theater. |
