doodlebug. An American word probably dating back to Cal- ifornia at the beginning of the 20th century for any divining rod said to be able to locate oil and other minerals. The term is usually applied to the bogus divining rods of con men. The word was also used during World War II to describe the Ger- man flying bomb or V-1, and previously was the name of a tiger beetle or its larva. |
