doolally. Nuts, crazy, bonkers. British troops in India during the 19th century waited in the town of Deolali for troopships to take them home after their enlistments expired. Deolali, which they pronounced Doolally, became the scene of so much ab- berant behavior and illness among soldiers with too much time on their hands that the town’s name became synonymous with their crazy behavior, which was also called “doolally fever.” |
