Many authorities cite the Middle English ladde, “serving man,” as the source for lad, “boy or young man.” Oth- ers, however, suggest the Anglo-Saxon proper man’s name Ladda as the word’s ancestor. Lass may be a truncated form of laddesse, the feminine of ladde, but it could derive from the Swedish losk kona, “an unmarried woman.”
