词汇 | lacrosse |
词源 | lacrosse. Lacrosse is probably the only sport whose name has religious significance. When French priest Pierre de Charlevoix saw Algonquin Indians playing their game of baggataway in 1705, he thought that the webbed sticks they used resembled a bishop’s cross and called the game lacrosse, which eventually supplanted the Indian name. While playing lacrosse “to cele- brate George III’s birthday” on June 4, 1763, Ojibwa and Sac Indians propelled the ball over the walls of Fort Michillimacki- nac and rushed in on the pretext of retrieving it, seizing weap- ons hidden by their squaws and massacring the garrison. |
