win, place, and show. Terms for horses that finish first, sec- ond, and third in a race. Win, place, and show originated at early United States racetracks where small boards were used to record the names of the first three finishers of every race. These boards were so small that only the names of the first two finishers were “placed” on the first board, place thus designating the number two horse. A second board was used to “show” the name of the third finisher, and show became the term for third place. |
