poikilothermia. A rare ailment that makes one extremely sensitive to cold, unable to maintain a constant body tempera- ture. The popular fantasy and science-fiction author H.P. (Howard Phillips) Lovecraft (1890–1937) suffered from this disorder, which takes its name from Greek. Lovecraft had to wear many layers of warm clothing on the hottest days and even on moving to Florida wore a heavy overcoat during the summer. |
