Boxer Rebellion. The Chinese anti-foreigner movement ear- ly in the 20th century originated with a Shantung secret society known as the I-Ho-Chuan, which the British thought meant “righteous, uniting fists” (it actually meant “righteous harmony band”). So the British, or “foreign devils,” as they were called, punned upon members of what they thought were the “fists” and called them Boxers, dubbing their uprising the Boxer Rebellion. |
