词汇 | bowl over |
词源 | bowl over. Apparently this term, meaning to surprise greatly, is not from bowling, nor is it an Americanism. Logan Pearsall Smith’s Words and Idioms (1925) claims it derives from a cricket term describing the bowler throwing the ball to the batsman. First used in England, the expression crossed the Atlantic by the end of the 19th century. |
