词汇 taxi squad
词源
taxi squad. In the late 1940s Art McBride, the original owner of the Cleveland Browns football team, had a number of play- ers under contract to him who weren’t on the active player list and could only play if one of his active players was injured and deactivated. Since this seemed like a waste of his money, he put these extra players to work as drivers in his taxicab company. Soon all such players in the pro leagues were being called members of the taxi squad. Later, when the rules changed, the term was applied to the four extra players on a professional football team who aren’t allowed to suit up for an official game but who are ready to join the team to replace injured or unsuc- cessful players.
