tattletale. An informer, one who carries tales. Tattletale, which is still commonly heard, is an Americanism patterned on the much earlier British tell-tale (as in Tell tale tit / Your tongue shall be split . . . ) meaning the same. It wasn’t used by school children here until the 18th century, perhaps 300 years after its ancestor. American children increasingly use the gang- ster movie term rat for a tattletale today, calling tattling ratting. |
