词汇 box and cox
词源
box and cox. This old expression came to mind after I read a report that poor immigrants in Central Islip, New York, are renting beds in private residences for $300 a month, these “hot beds” (so called because the sheets are always warm) rented for night and day shifts of 12 hours. This practice of alternate privi- leges has been called box and cox since 1847, when English playwright John Maddison Morton’s one-act farce of the same name made the expression popular. In the play Mrs. Bouncer, a landlady, rents the same room to Box, who works nights, and Cox, who works days. When one of them arrives home out of turn, the fun begins. The author’s father, Thomas Morton, also contributed a word to the language. See mrs. grundy.
