This old expression came to mind after I read a report that poor immigrants in Central Islip, New York, are renting beds in private residences for $300 a month, these “hot beds” (so called because the sheets are always warm) rented for night and day shifts of 12 hours. This practice of alternate privi- leges has been called box and cox since 1847, when English playwright John Maddison Morton’s one-act farce of the same name made the expression popular. In the play Mrs. Bouncer, a landlady, rents the same room to Box, who works nights, and Cox, who works days. When one of them arrives home out of turn, the fun begins.
