bowling. Pins and balls for a sport similar to bowling were found some years ago in an Egyptian tomb dating to 5200 b.c. Bowling was long banned in England, along with football and other games, because kegling diverted men from practicing sports more valuable to a country often at war, such as archery and swordsmanship. Several English monarchs did like to bowl, though; in fact, Henry VIII built his own alley at Whitehall. The Dutch brought bowling to America, and Bowling Green in New York’s financial district is so named because the sport was taught there. |
