词汇 boxes
词源
boxes. Opera houses were the first theaters to feature the partially enclosed rooms that came to be called boxes. While opera houses still have boxes encircling the auditorium, most other theaters have abandoned them because of their poor view of the stage. Once, however, they were the only desirable choice for those who came to the theater to be seen as much as to see. Some boxes held as many as 20 people, and they were often equipped with blinds that could be pulled down to give occu- pants complete privacy when, for one reason or another, they didn’t care to watch the play. As early as Shakespearean times rich patrons were allowed to buy seats onstage in English theat- ers, usually to the dismay of the actors, who objected to fops proudly displaying their new clothes and chattering endlessly, paying no attention to the play.
