Poet of the D.T.’s. The nickname of author John Bartholomew Gough (1817–86), who became a temperance author and lec- turer after he was saved from alcoholism by a pledge he took. His moral authority was diminished somewhat when in 1845 he was found drunk in a New York brothel after being missing for a week. No one seemed to believe his story that he had been carried to the brothel after accidentally drinking drugged cher- ry soda.
