词汇 | gazebo |
词源 | gazebo. A gazebo is a garden structure of Dutch origin that was originally built of stone or brick. It is now a small, wooden-roofed building that is screened on all sides and set apart from the house to provide an attractive view of the gar- den. The word’s origin is uncertain. One unproved theory holds that this word for a garden lookout or belvedere is a hu- morous invention of some 18th-century wit, who modeled it on the word gaze, pretending that gaze was a Latin word (it is of unknown origin), which would make gazebo the future form “I shall see” of that hypothetical verb. Nor has anyone proved that the word is from some obscure Chinese source, as its brief first-recorded use in 1752 in an architectural book suggests to some etymologists: “The Elevation of a Chinese tower of Gazeba.” |
