词汇 gay lothario
词源
gay Lothario. Lothario’s boastful speech from Nicholas Rowe’s tragedy in blank verse The Fair Penitent (1703) ex- plains why his name became a synonym for a libertine or se- ducer. Lothario isn’t by any means a model lover, for Calista, the fair penitent, stabs herself after being seduced by him. Wounded in a duel, he dies claiming: “In Love I Triumphed: Those joys are lodg’d beyond the reach of Fate . . .” Rowe ap- parently stole the plot for his play from Massinger and Field’s Fatal Dowery (1632), shortening it and modifying the end- ing, and borrowed Lothario’s name and character from Wil- liam D’Avenant’s tragedy The Cruel Brothers (1630), though Lothario is also the name of characters in Cervantes’s Don Quixote and Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister. Rowe’s play, a favorite of Dr. Johnson’s, was extremely popular for over a century, the legendary David Garrick playing the lead for a time, and made “the haughty, gallant, gay Lothario” proverbial. Loth- ario’s philosophy might be summed up in his lines: “The driving storm of Passion will have way, and I must yield be- fore it.”
