top of the heap. The biggest, or best, an American expression that goes back at least to the 1930s. Heap itself can mean a pile or large amount of money, that meaning a century older. I re- member an old Mark Hellinger story about a gangster who vowed he’d wind up with more money and fame than anyone— on top of the heap. He was finally killed by rival gangsters and dumped on the top of a garbage heap. |
