词汇 | fuzz |
词源 | fuzz. Most etymologists have given up as a lost cause the derivation of fuzz for the police or a police officer, but here are a few suggestions for the Americanism’s origin. Fuzz, which apparently was born in the early 1920s, may contemp- tuously refer to “fuzzy” lint or hair on the uniforms of police officers. It may also have originally been black slang for the hairy body of a white person, although no such usage has been documented. The New Dictionary of American Slang (1986) says it was first black slang for “man with the fuzzy balls,” meaning a white man. Fuzz has to be marked “Origin Unknown.” |
