Any baseless report, a latrine rumor, is in Australian military slang called a furphy and honors, or dishonors, one of two possible candidates: either the firm of Furphy & Co., whose name appeared on World War I latrine buckets supplied to the Australian forces; or a contractor named Furphy who supplied rubbish carts to Melbourne army camps about 1915.
