词源 | fustian. Fustian first referred to a coarse cloth material made of cotton and flax in Fostat, a suburb of Cairo. By the 16th cen- tury it came to mean inflated, turgid, pompous, or bombastic language. For example, in Epistle to Arbuthnot (1735), Alexan- der Pope wrote: “And he, whose fustian’s so sublimely bad, / It is not poetry, but prose run mad.” |
