Fun City. A well-known nickname for New York City said to have originated in 1966 with Mayor John V. Lindsay (1921–2001) on his first day in office when a reporter asked if he was happy he’d been elected. “I still think it’s a fun city,” Lindsay replied. Author Dick Schapp first capitalized the name in his Herald Tribune column “What’s New in Fun City.” See big apple. |
