词汇 | fuller brush man |
词源 | Fuller Brush man. Alfred C. Fuller, founder of the Fuller Brush Company, liked to quote the boosterism “ ‘American’ ter- minates in ‘I can’ and ‘Dough’ begins with ‘Do,’ ” which he may have invented. Fuller, who built his door-to-door business into a $130 million enterprise, died in 1973, aged 88. At one point his ubiquitous Fuller Brush men and Fullerettes (female sales- men) called on 85 of every 100 American homes, even made home deliveries by dog sled in Alaska. These modern-day ped- dlers weren’t welcome everywhere—some communities still have laws against any door-to-door salesmen calling without a specific invitation—but for the most part they were American favorites. Disney’s big bad wolf in the Three Little Pigs film dis- guised himself as a Fuller Brush man, Red Skelton played the lead in the movie The Fuller Brush Man, and Lucille Ball starred in The Fuller Brush Girl. Fuller Brush men were the subject of about as many off-color jokes as the traveling salesman and the farmer’s daughter. |
