词汇 | furlong |
词源 | furlong. In medieval times a furlong—from the Old English furh, “furrow,” and lang, “long”—was the length of an ideal fur- row in a plowed field, which was one-eighth of a Roman mile. Though the length of furrows and other land measurements changed over the centuries, a furlang, changed slightly to fur- long, remained the same eighth of a mile, or 220 yards, and be- came a measurement used primarily in horse racing. |
