词汇 | fuss and feathers |
词源 | fuss and feathers. Nonsense over nothing at all. The expres- sion dates back to the 19th century, a time when Old Fuss and Feathers was the nickname of U.S. general Winfield Scott, a very vain man, all 300 pounds of him. Scott, a genuine Ameri- can hero and a general from the War of 1812 through the Civil War, was said to love himself, food, and wine—in that order. Dressed to the nines in his splendid self-designed gold-braided uniform and plumed hat, he was “almost a parade by himself ” as he waddled down the street. As a contemporary put it: “What a wonderful mixture of gasconade, ostentation, fuss, feathers, bluster and genuine soldierly talent and courage is this same Winfield Scott.” See great scott! |
