A usually cheap rented room containing meager furniture, a bed, a wooden chair, table and lamp, etc. British author Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816) was a noted politician as well as a playwright. Sheridan’s son Thomas couldn’t understand his love of politics, though he later became a politician himself. “If I were in Parliament,” Thomas told his father one evening, “I would write on my forehead, ‘To Let.’ ” Sheridan made a point of studying the boy’s head for a moment and replied, “Add ‘Unfurnished.’ ” See last rose of summer; principal; roses have thorns. |
