词汇 | to oppose preston and his mastiffs |
词源 | to oppose Preston and his mastiffs. This mainly British ex- pression, meaning to take reckless action, is one of the oldest of eponymous phrases. It honors Christopher Preston, a late- 1600s entrepreneur who opened a bear garden (a place where bears were baited for the amusement of his customers). Preston kept a pack of huge vicious mastiffs to protect his business from potential thieves and troublemakers, and it soon became known that no one could oppose Preston and his mastiffs. Pres- ton himself was crushed to death by one of his bears. |
