The Third World. The underdeveloped countries of the world, those of Asia, Africa, and Latin America, who weren’t aligned with either the Communist or non-Communist bloc during the cold war (qv). The phrase is a translation of the French tiers monde. It is usually said to have been coined by French scholar Alfred Sauvy (1898–1990) in the early 1950s, though Indian leader Jawaharlal Nehru (1889–1964) has also been credited with the words. The English translation of tiers monde doesn’t seem to have been recorded until 1963. The terms First World (the West) and Second World (Communist) haven’t been much used. |
