the Swan of Usk. A perfectionist poet, Virgil was always dif- fident about his own poetic powers. When he died in 19 b.c., he left instructions that all 12 books of his Aeneid be burned because the manuscript wasn’t polished enough. The work was saved when the Roman emperor Augustus ordered that it be published despite Virgil’s last wish. Later the Aeneid became so venerated that it was used to foretell the future by opening a volume at random to a page, that page supposedly predicting what was to come.
