词汇 | the tenderloin |
词源 | the tenderloin. In New York City, where the expression orig- inated in the 1870s, the tenderloin was the area from 23rd to 42nd Streets west of Broadway. Gambling and prostitution flourished in this district, giving police officers “luscious op- portunities” for graft. In fact, one cop named Williams was so happy to be assigned to the old 29th precinct covering the area in about 1890 that he said he had always eaten chuck steak but from now on he’d “be eating tenderloin.” His remark led to the area being dubbed the tenderloin, that name eventually trans- ferred to similar places throughout the country. |
