the Tomatina. It is called the Tomatina in the town of Bunel, not far from Valencia, Spain, where it has been held for the past 60 years on the last Wednesday in August, the height of the local tomato harvesting season. Though officially regarded as a tomato festival, the Tomatina has become best known as a huge tomato food fight in which some 25,000 people pelt each other with dead and overripe tomatoes. Soon after farm trucks dump some 275,000 pounds of tomatoes into the down- town streets, eager contestants begin scooping up whole and mashed handfuls of the bright-red fruit and throwing them at each other. The slippery streets become coated with tomato paste, a river of tomato juice half a foot or so deep flowing along them. As for the participants, by the time local fire en- gines arrive to hose down the streets these combatants are of- ten unrecognizeable.
