The legendary Spanish painter wrote the fortunately little-known play Desire Caught by the Tail (1941). One of its stage directions instructed that the character Tart, played by a blond stripper, “go to the front, face the audience and urinate and syphilize for a full five minutes.” What syphilize means no one knows, but Tart urinat- ed on stage for a while in what was the dramatic highlight of the play, which is supposed to be about food, money, and sex. And with all power the pi- geon flocks dash into the rifle bullets! And in all bombed houses, the keys turn twice around in the locks!”
