词汇 the way of all flesh
词源
the way of all flesh. Death, as in the first recorded use of the phrase, English playwright John Webster’s Westward Ho (1607): “I saw him now going the way of all flesh.” Three hundred years later, in 1903, British author Samuel Butler made the words fa- mous again with the posthumous publication of his novel The Way of All Flesh, which he had actually finished writing in 1886. Originally called Ernest Pontifex, after its main character, the book is in some respects autobiographical.
