词源 | The Wilderness. One of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, this area in northern Virginia was named for its thick, tangled woods and dense brush. Herman Melville wrote in Battle-pieces: “In glades they meet skull after skull/ Where pine cones lay—the rusted gun,/ Green shoes full of bones,/ the mouldering coat/ and huddled-up skeletons.” |
