The Russian poet and novelist Boris Paster- nak (1890–1960) survived the darkest years of Stalinism in the Soviet Union even though he was a staunch anti-Stalinist and won the Nobel Prize in literature (which he was forced to decline). According to Russian poet Andrei Voznesensky, Pas- ternak survived because for some unknown reason Stalin had given the order, “Don’t touch this village idiot.” |
