词汇 | jack |
词源 | jack. Jack, for money in general, is an Americanism first re- corded in 1859, but the expression is probably older, possibly deriving from the expression to make one’s jack, “to succeed in one’s endeavors,” first attested in 1778. This expression, in turn, may come from the British slang jack, for “a farthing and a counter used at gaming tables,” which dates back to about 1700. Also, a home run in baseball. The term was originally a verb, first recorded in 1979, meaning to hit a ball hard, jack it, espe- cially for a long home run. But though it is unrecorded in any dictionary, jack also has come to mean a home run itself. Speaking of Giant’s star Barry Bonds, an opposing player said: “Two years ago he hit 73 jacks. Last year he won a batting title. I don’t know what else the guy can do.” (New York Times, Sep- tember 9, 2003). |
