sidewalk. Americans have been calling the part of a street re- served for pedestrians a sidewalk since at least 1851, when the word was first recorded, describing a cement walk at the side of a road. In fact, side passage was used as early as 1790. Today Americans rarely say anything but “sidewalk,” except as region- alisms, while Australians use footpath and the British prefer footway and pavement. |
