词汇 | sick man of europe |
词源 | Sick Man of Europe. A nickname for the Ottoman Empire, which never regained its grand days of glory after entering the 20th century. The term is said to have resulted from Russian Czar Nicholas I saying in 1853: “I am not so eager about what shall be done when the sick man dies, as I am to determine with England what shall not be done upon that event taking place.” |
