Siegfried Line. A zone of heavy fortifications in Germany facing the French maginot line that was built in the years be- fore World War II. On March 7, 1945, the Western Allies smashed through the line and crossed the Rhine, the war in Eu- rope ending for all intents and purposes about six weeks later. Siegfried, the line’s eponym, is a great hero of German mythol- ogy. The line is also remembered by the old British song “We’re gonna hang our washing on the Siegfried Line.” |
